India turns the tide against South Africa in style

New Delhi: India clinched the third and final match with remarkable ease, riding on solid performances from both the top-order batters and the bowling unit. The openers set the tone with assured strokeplay, while Virat Kohli added substance and flair to help India wrap up the chase comfortably. Earlier, the bowlers delivered an appreciable performance by restricting South Africa to under 300 runs for the first time in the series.

South Africa had looked on course for a commanding total thanks to fluent batting from Quinton de Kock and skipper Temba Bavuma. De Kock, familiar with Indian conditions and bowling styles, launched a fearless assault and notched up his seventh ODI century against India. Prasidh Krishna, who was expensive in his first two overs conceding 27 runs, staged an impressive comeback. His disciplined second spell earned him three crucial wickets. Kuldeep Yadav continued his golden run, weaving his magic to claim four wickets with exceptional control and variation.

In response, Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal laid a solid foundation with a confident and determined opening stand. The South African pace attack tested Jaiswal early on, but once the pair settled, they began to score freely. Rohit was at his elegant best, dispatching short balls into the stands with ease. A century seemed within reach, but he fell unexpectedly while accelerating.

Virat Kohli then walked in and began cautiously, gauging the pitch and bowlers. Once set, he shifted gears effortlessly, producing a sparkling 65 off 45 balls. His fitness, intensity, and hunger for runs remain unmatched—far superior to many younger players. Discussions about his retirement, therefore, seem misplaced; as long as he enjoys the game and keeps scoring, Indian cricket will continue to benefit.

The series has also intensified competition within the squad. With both Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad scoring centuries, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant will face a tough challenge to reclaim their spots in the playing XI. India’s bench strength looks healthier than ever, with a steady stream of young, talented players emerging, especially in white-ball cricket.

A rare smile from Gautam Gambhir when Kohli struck the winning runs added a heartwarming touch to the finish. Indian fans will hope to see more of that in the upcoming T20 series as well.
